The return inspection is the most sensitive moment of any car rental. A dent not flagged at pickup, a fuel level that’s too low or a late drop-off can all get expensive. This guide gives you the reflexes you need to hand the vehicle back without any nasty surprises.

Before you return the vehicle: checklist

  • Collect all your personal belongings: trunk, glove box, seats, door pockets. Double-check chargers, cables and sunglasses.
  • Check the fuel level: it should match the level stated in the contract (full tank or pickup level). Stop at the nearest station to top up if needed.
  • Clean the interior if necessary: heavy cleaning can be billed. If you’ve carried animals, sand or food, run a quick vacuum through it.
  • Return the vehicle at the agreed time: being late can trigger an extra day’s charge. Let your partner know on WhatsApp if something unexpected comes up.
  • Keep your pickup photos within reach: on your phone or in the cloud. You’ll want them if a damage claim is disputed.

The return inspection

The return inspection mirrors the one performed at pickup. Here’s how it unfolds:

  1. Walk-around: the agent inspects all four sides, bumpers, roof (if reachable), windows and mirrors. Any new damage that wasn’t there at pickup gets noted.
  2. Interior check: seats, carpet, dashboard, accessories. Normal wear (light dust, fingerprints) is not chargeable.
  3. Mileage check: compared to the reading recorded at pickup. If your contract has a daily mileage cap, anything over it can be billed (check the per-extra-km rate at booking time).
  4. Fuel check: compared against the level noted at pickup.
  5. Signature: if everything is in order, you sign the return report and the security deposit is released.

Be there for the return inspection

Never leave the vehicle without being present for the return inspection. A report signed in your absence strips you of any right to contest later. Stay until the return report is signed.

Releasing the security deposit

Once the inspection is validated with no reservations, the security deposit is released according to the original payment method:

  • Card pre-authorization: the hold expires automatically within 1 to 7 business days, depending on your bank. You don’t have to do anything — just check that the blocked amount disappears from your statement.
  • Wave / Orange Money: the hold is lifted almost instantly once the return is validated.
  • Cash: the amount is handed back to you in person when you sign the return report.

If you disagree about a damage claim

If the agent flags damage you contest, here’s how to handle it:

  1. Compare on the spot with your pickup photos. If the damage is visible in your pickup photos, it can’t be charged to you.
  2. Ask for a written itemization of the damage recorded: location, description, amount claimed.
  3. Don’t sign under pressure. You have the right to take the time to verify.
  4. Contact Senoto if the disagreement persists — the team can step in as a go-between with the partner.

Your best protection: your pickup photos

A 2-minute video walking around the entire vehicle at pickup, with the date automatically stamped by your phone, is the single best defense against any unjustified dispute at return time. Make a systematic habit of it.

Special cases

Late return

If you know you’re going to be late returning the vehicle, let your partner know as early as possible on WhatsApp. One hour late is usually tolerated. Beyond that, a half-day or extra day may be billed — check the terms in your contract.

Incident during the rental

If you’ve had an accident or noticed damage during the rental, report it before the return (ideally at the moment of the incident). Damage you flag proactively is always handled better than damage discovered at the return inspection.

Stolen or totaled vehicle

In this exceptional case, a police report is mandatory. Contact your Senoto partner immediately and keep the report number safe — you’ll need it for the insurance process.

FAQ

Can the security deposit be charged without my consent?

With a card pre-authorization, the security deposit is a hold — it’s blocked, not charged. It can only be converted into an actual charge if damage is recorded and documented at the return inspection. Any charge must be backed by a written itemization.

How long is the security deposit held on my card?

In practice, 1 to 5 business days after the return for most French and European banks. Some banks can take up to 7 to 10 days. If the amount is still blocked beyond that, contact your bank with the return receipt.

What should I do if I find damage on the vehicle during the rental?

Take photos immediately (with the date), and notify your partner on WhatsApp the same day. Don’t wait for the return to flag damage you didn’t cause — a late report can be read as accepting responsibility.
