Collecting your vehicle in Saly
Saly-Portudal is Senegal’s main coastal resort, 80 km south of Dakar. This guide covers the drive, navigating the tourist area and the specifics of the Petite Côte. Senoto is a marketplace: your independent partner coordinates the time and place of the handover directly with you.
How to collect your vehicle
- 1Select Saly / Mbour when booking
Choose « Saly / Mbour » as the pickup location when booking. The area covers Saly-Portudal, Saly Niakhniakhal, La Somone and Mbour.
- 2If you are coming from Dakar or AIBD
From Dakar: take the toll motorway (A1) to Sindia, then the national road towards Mbour/Saly. Total: 80 km, 1 h 30. Toll Dakar → Sindia: about 3,000 FCFA. From AIBD: head south towards Sindia, 45 km, 40–50 min, no toll.
- 3Arrange the meeting with your partner
Your partner will contact you directly on WhatsApp to agree on the exact place and time for the vehicle handover. Senoto connects you: the handover itself is coordinated between you and the independent partner.
- 4Check the vehicle before driving off
Saly is quiet — take the time to walk fully around the vehicle (four sides, interior, mileage, fuel level) and photograph the handover record. The contract is in French.
- 5Get your bearings in the area
Saly is a tourist area dotted with sandy tracks and unmarked routes between the hotels. Google Maps is reliable on main roads, less so on the internal lanes of hotel complexes. Ask your partner about local shortcuts if needed.
The Dakar → Saly drive in detail
- Toll motorway (A1): Dakar → Sindia interchange (65 km, 55 min). Well lit, dual carriageway. Toll in FCFA cash only (≈ 3,000 FCFA).
- After Sindia, take national road RN1 → Mbour → Saly. 15 km, 20–25 min. Decent surfaced road but with speed bumps at the entrance to each village.
- Alternative without toll: national road via Rufisque, Bargny, Popenguine. 95 km, 2 h 30. Avoid — narrow road, lorries, village crossings.
- From AIBD: direct road south, no motorway or toll. 45 km, 40–50 min. This is the simplest route.
- Recommended stop: the Total station on the way out of Sindia is the last refuelling point before Saly. Top-up + coffee.
Driving in the Saly / Mbour area
- Saly centre is a pedestrian/tourist area. Vehicles use the perimeter road and side lanes. Max speed: 30 km/h.
- Mbour town (fish market, shopping centre) is 5 km south. The streets are narrow and busy — park on the edge and walk.
- La Somone (north of Saly) is reached by a surfaced road. The Somone lagoon is worth the detour, but parking is limited — arrive early.
- In the rainy season (July–September), some inland tracks turn muddy. An SUV is more comfortable than a city car in these conditions.
- Nights in Saly are quiet. Public lighting is limited on secondary tracks — use main beam.
High season vs low season
- High season (November–April): hotels full, prices higher, vehicles in heavy demand. Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead.
- Low season (May–October): more affordable rates, better availability. The heat is intense (35–40 °C) — air conditioning is essential.
- During Tabaski and the Grand Magal, the Dakar → Saly road can be congested (pilgrims heading to Touba). Allow 3 h instead of 1 h 30.
- Christmas / New Year week is the absolute peak — Saly is Dakar residents’ number one destination. Book 15 days ahead.
