Renting a car in Dakar isn’t exactly straightforward. Between the informal agencies that only operate over WhatsApp, the big international names whose prices have nothing to do with the local market, and the tourist platforms airlifted in from Europe, finding a reliable vehicle at a fair price often turns into an obstacle course. This guide gives you the essentials you need to book with confidence.
How much does it cost to rent a car in Dakar?
Prices vary widely depending on the type of vehicle, the season and the rental channel you choose. In 2026, the typical ranges on the Dakar market are as follows:
- City car (Renault Clio, Peugeot 208, Kia Picanto): 25,000 to 35,000 FCFA per day (38 to 53 €). Ideal for getting around inside Dakar.
- Compact SUV (Dacia Duster, Hyundai Creta): 32,000 to 50,000 FCFA per day (49 to 76 €). Versatile for both city driving and regional trips.
- SUV / 4×4 (Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan X-Trail): 55,000 to 90,000 FCFA per day (84 to 137 €). A must for unpaved tracks (Lompoul, Siné-Saloum, Casamance).
- Pick-up (Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger): 50,000 to 70,000 FCFA per day (76 to 107 €). For fieldwork and hauling equipment.
- Premium (Range Rover, Mercedes GLE): 90,000 to 150,000 FCFA per day (137 to 229 €). For business travel or events.
On top of these base rates, you usually need to add the security deposit (between 300,000 and 800,000 FCFA depending on the vehicle), optional insurance, and — with the less transparent rental companies — variable charges that appear at the return inspection. One piece of advice: always insist on a written price list before taking the vehicle.
Good to know
High-season rates (December to February, July–August) can be 20 to 40% higher than off-season prices. Booking three to four weeks in advance is enough to dodge most of the surcharges.
What documents do you need to rent a car in Senegal?
To rent a vehicle in Senegal, three documents are always required:
- A valid driver’s license, either national or international. French, European, American, Canadian and ECOWAS country licenses are accepted without any extra paperwork. Licenses from other countries sometimes require an international permit as well.
- A government-issued ID: Senegalese national ID card, passport, or residence permit.
- A means of paying the security deposit: an international bank card (Visa/Mastercard) for a card hold at the counter when picking up the vehicle, a Wave hold, or cash.
The minimum driver age is generally 23, with at least two years of driving experience. Some agencies require 25 for premium vehicles or 4×4s. An additional driver can be added for a daily supplement (3,000 to 5,000 FCFA per day on average).
Pick-up: airport, Plateau or Almadies?
Where you collect the vehicle largely depends on your itinerary. Here are the practical options in Dakar:
Blaise-Diagne Airport (AIBD, Diass)
The right choice if you’re flying in from abroad. The airport sits 45 km southeast of Dakar; picking up a vehicle straight from the terminal saves you from chaining a taxi or a shuttle. Most rental companies have an airport counter or offer in-parking delivery. See our dedicated AIBD guide.
Dakar — Plateau / Almadies
Convenient if you’re already in town, or if you’re landing and heading to your hotel first. The main agencies cluster around Boulevard de la République, the Corniche, and the Almadies area. Easily reachable by Uber / Yango / Heetch from anywhere in Dakar.
Mbour / Saly
For Petite-Côte stays without going through Dakar — direct pick-up at the resort, immediate departure for la Somone, Joal, or the Siné-Saloum.

Pitfalls to avoid
A few classic mistakes that even seasoned travelers fall into:
- Skipping a photographed joint inspection. Without dated photos of the vehicle at pick-up, it’s impossible to contest damage at return. Take 15 minutes, film a full walk- around in 4K, and keep the file.
- Accepting a cash deposit without a receipt. Always insist on a written document (or a traceable card hold recorded by the counter). Deposit disputes account for 70% of complaints about informal rentals in Senegal.
- Not checking the insurance. Third-party insurance is mandatory but often inadequate. Ask for a comprehensive (all-risk) extension — around 5,000 FCFA per additional day.
- Forgetting the tolls. The AIBD → Dakar motorway costs 3,900 FCFA one way. The VDN charges tolls too. Budget 5,000 to 8,000 FCFA in tolls per day if you drive a lot.
What about longer trips?
If your itinerary includes Saint-Louis, the Siné-Saloum, the Casamance or the Bassari country, go for a 4×4 or an SUV with decent ground clearance. Lateritic tracks can be demanding, especially in the rainy season (July–October). Read our guide on choosing the right vehicle for a Dakar → Saint-Louis → Lac Rose loop.
Finally, watch the mileage policy: many contracts impose a daily cap (often 200 km/day). For long road trips, insist on unlimited mileage — it’s become standard on modern online platforms, but it’s still rare with traditional rental companies.
