Renting a car in Senegal is open to foreign drivers, provided you show the right documents. National or international license, minimum age, additional driver: here’s what you need to know before you arrive.

Which driver’s license is accepted?

Senegal is a signatory to the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic and a member of ECOWAS. In practice, the rules of acceptance are as follows:

  • French, European (EU/EEA), Canadian, American, and Australian licenses: accepted directly with no paperwork for a tourist stay. Bring the original — photocopies are never accepted.
  • Licenses from ECOWAS countries (Mali, Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Senegal, Burkina Faso, etc.): valid across the entire territory without restriction.
  • Licenses from other nationalities: an International Driving Permit (IDP), issued by your home country, is strongly recommended. Important: the IDP must always be presented together with your national license — it does not replace it.

Practical tip

Even if your national license is legally sufficient, bring an international permit. At a police or gendarmerie checkpoint, it makes verification easier and avoids any misunderstanding over a document issued in a foreign language.

Minimum age and license seniority

Most rental companies in Senegal apply the following rules:

  • General minimum age: 23, with at least 2 years of driving experience.
  • 4×4s and high-end SUVs: often a 25-year minimum.
  • Premium / luxury vehicles: 25-year minimum, sometimes 3 years of license required.
  • Young driver surcharge: some rental companies apply a surcharge of 5,000 to 10,000 FCFA / day for drivers aged 23 to 25.

Documents to carry at all times

Whenever you’re behind the wheel in Senegal, you must be able to produce the following documents on demand at a checkpoint:

  1. Your driver’s license (original, not a photocopy).
  2. The vehicle registration document (provided by the rental partner, kept in the glove box).
  3. The vehicle’s insurance certificate (also provided by the rental partner).
  4. Your passport or ID.
  5. The rental contract (printed or accessible on your phone).

Stow everything in the glove box as soon as you pick up the car

The registration and insurance certificate from the rental partner should stay in the vehicle. Your license and passport stay on you. At a checkpoint, present everything calmly and without rushing.

Additional driver

If several people take turns at the wheel, every extra driver must be declared on the rental contract. The usual terms:

  • Surcharge: between 3,000 and 5,000 FCFA per additional driver, per day (contact your partner for exact details).
  • The additional driver must present the same documents as the primary driver (license, ID).
  • A driver not declared on the contract is not covered by the rental partner’s insurance in the event of a claim.

FAQ

Is my French driver’s license enough?

Yes. A French license (or, more broadly, any EU/EEA license) is valid in Senegal with no paperwork for visitors on a temporary stay.

Do I need to have my license translated?

No, as long as your license is written in Latin characters (Roman alphabet). For a license in Arabic, Cyrillic, Chinese, or other scripts, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is essential.

Is my motorcycle license valid for a car?

No. Senegalese license categories follow the international classification: category B (car) is distinct from category A (motorcycle). You must hold a category B license to rent a passenger vehicle.
