The Dakar — Saint-Louis — Lac Rose triangle is one of the most popular itineraries for travelers in Senegal. In three to four days, you string together the capital, the former AOF capital listed by UNESCO, and the iconic pink lake. The roads are generally passable, but the question of which vehicle to choose remains central — it determines your comfort, your pace, and your ability to leave the beaten path.
Detailed itinerary and distances
A typical circuit unfolds as follows:
- Day 1 — Dakar → Saint-Louis: 260 km, 4h via the toll highway and then the N2. Arrival in late afternoon, overnight on the island.
- Day 2 — Saint-Louis: visit the historic island, the Langue de Barbarie, and possibly Djoudj National Park (birdlife) or the Guembeul reserve.
- Day 3 — Saint-Louis → Lac Rose: 230 km, 3h30 via the N2 and then the Niayes road. Arrival in mid-afternoon, tour around the lake, overnight on site.
- Day 4 — Lac Rose → Dakar: 35 km, 1h. Return to the airport or downtown.
What the terrain throws at you
The Dakar → Thiès highway is excellent. The N2 from Thiès to Saint-Louis is a properly maintained two-lane road, but with heavy traffic (trucks, public minibuses). The real challenges start elsewhere:
- The Lac Rose bypass road includes sandy sections — impassable in a low-clearance sedan, especially after rain.
- If you want to reach Djoudj or the Langue de Barbarie from Saint-Louis, expect lateritic tracks. A 4×4 is strongly recommended.
- In the rainy season (July to October), some sections can turn muddy. Even the Lac Rose road becomes problematic.
Our recommendation by profile
If you stick to the tarmac
A compact SUV (Dacia Duster, Hyundai Tucson) is more than enough. Decent comfort, reasonable fuel consumption (7–9 L/100 km on diesel), ground clearance that handles rougher patches. Indicative budget: 140,000 to 200,000 FCFA for 4 days (213 to 305 €).
If you want to explore the tracks (Djoudj, Langue de Barbarie, Lompoul)
A proper 4×4 (Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, Toyota Hilux) becomes essential. You gain in safety, cargo capacity, and — most of all — peace of mind when a tricky section appears. Budget: 220,000 to 370,000 FCFA for 4 days (335 to 565 €).
In the rainy season
From July to October, we advise against any sedan or city car for this circuit. Even the Lac Rose bypass can become impassable. Take a 4×4 even if you plan to stay on the tarmac — the detours forced on you may leave you no choice.
If you’re after premium comfort
A premium SUV (Range Rover Evoque, Mercedes GLE) delivers the best of both worlds: presence in the city, off-road capability for moderate tracks. Budget: 360,000 to 600,000 FCFA for 4 days (550 to 915 €). Ideal for a honeymoon, a business trip, or simply for the pleasure of it.

A few parting words
A good Dakar → Saint-Louis → Lac Rose circuit is, above all, about pacing. Don’t underestimate the distances (the real average speed on the N2 hovers around 70 km/h), plan refreshment stops, and most importantly: give yourself time in Saint-Louis. The city deserves at least two nights to absorb its atmosphere — the historic island, Guet Ndar, the sunsets over the Langue de Barbarie. Safe travels.
