The neighbourhood

Almadies, Ngor, Yoff — coastal Dakar

The Almadies form the westernmost point of the African continent (marked by a monument). The area combines upmarket residences, embassies, international schools (French Lycée, American school) and clifftop restaurants. It is the first choice for expats and visitors looking for proximity to the sea.

Ngor is a traditional fishing village that has become a fashionable neighbourhood. Ngor Island (5-minute pirogue from the beach, 500 FCFA return) is a popular beach and surf spot. The area offers a striking contrast between modern villas and fishing alleyways.

Yoff, north of the Almadies, is a Lébou neighbourhood (the fishing ethnic group who founded Dakar). Yoff beach is a recognised surf spot. The area is more popular in character than the Almadies but equally vibrant.

Distances from the Almadies: Plateau (20 min), Sandaga market (25 min), AIBD airport (50 min via the motorway), African Renaissance Monument (15 min). Total and Shell petrol stations on the VDN (5 min).
