Long-term Car Rental in Dakar

Expats settling in, consultants on a three-month mission, NGOs with field teams, digital nomads on an extended stay: long-term rental replaces buying a vehicle and eliminates all the hassle of maintenance, insurance and resale.

Why long-term

The advantages of an extended contract

Buying a vehicle in Senegal means registration, roadworthiness inspection, annual insurance, regular servicing, and selling at a loss when you leave. Long-term rental eliminates all of that.

Genuinely reducing rates

The longer you rent, the lower the daily rate. From two weeks the discount is meaningful; a month's rental costs considerably less than 30 × the daily rate.

Dedicated vehicle

No rotation: you keep the same vehicle for the full length of the contract. Park it at home, take it to the Petite Côte for the weekend, personalise it with a sat-nav or child seat.

Insurance and servicing included

Basic insurance is included. Routine servicing (oil change, tyres) is generally covered by the rental partner on contracts of one month or more. No unexpected bills.

Contractual flexibility

Extensions possible mid-contract (subject to availability). Early return under negotiated conditions. None of the rigidity of a purchase.

Who it suits

Common profiles

Long-term rental meets very different needs. Here are the most common profiles in Dakar.

Expats settling in

You are in Senegal for 6 months to 2 years. Buying a vehicle is complicated (registration, resale). Long-term rental gives you immediate mobility without tying up capital.

Consultants and missions

A 1–6 month mission for an NGO, development agency or consultancy. Vehicle matched to the terrain (SUV for trips outside Dakar, saloon for city appointments). Professional invoicing available.

Digital nomads

A 1–3 month stay in Dakar, Saly or Saint-Louis. A car lets you explore the country at weekends while keeping a working base. More economical than a daily taxi.

Winter sun seekers

You spend the winter in Senegal (November to April). A rental for 4–5 months is incomparably simpler than buying and reselling each season.

Daily life

Living with a rental car in Dakar

Parking: in Dakar, parking depends on the neighbourhood. On the Plateau, daytime parking is paid and supervised by informal attendants (200–500 FCFA). In the Almadies and residential areas (Maristes, Mermoz, Liberté), parking is free and straightforward. Most residential buildings and complexes have car parks.

Servicing: for contracts of one month or more, routine servicing (oil change, filters, worn tyres) is generally at the rental partner's expense. If a mechanical problem arises, contact the partner — a swap or repair is organised within 24 to 48 hours.

Washing: car washes are everywhere in Dakar (1,000–2,500 FCFA for a full exterior and interior wash). During the dry season (Harmattan), a weekly wash is recommended to protect the bodywork from dust.

Fuel: prices are state-regulated (identical at every station). Total, Shell and Oilibya are ubiquitous. For city use within Dakar, expect roughly 2 to 3 fill-ups per month in a city car.

Security: keep the vehicle in a closed car park overnight where possible. Do not leave valuables visible. Beyond these basic precautions, Dakar is a safe city to drive in.

Comparison

Long-term rental vs buying: the numbers

Buying a second-hand vehicle in Dakar involves: purchase price (3 to 15 million FCFA depending on the model), registration (150,000–300,000 FCFA), annual roadworthiness test (15,000 FCFA), annual insurance (200,000–500,000 FCFA), unpredictable servicing costs, and a 30–50% loss on resale after two years.

Long-term rental covers everything (verified vehicle, insurance, routine servicing) at a predictable monthly rate. No capital tied up, no resale risk, no administrative paperwork. For stays of less than 18 months, long-term rental is almost always more cost-effective.

For stays of more than 18 months, the calculation depends on the vehicle and usage. Discuss your situation with our team for a personalised comparison.

Frequently asked questions

From what duration does long-term apply?
Reducing rates generally start from two weeks. The discount is more pronounced from one month, two months and three months — each threshold lowers the daily rate.
Is mileage limited on a long-term contract?
That depends on the contract. Unlimited mileage is often available for contracts of one month or more. For intensive use (field missions outside Dakar), a customised mileage allowance can be negotiated. Everything is specified in the quote.
Can I extend the contract mid-rental?
Yes, subject to vehicle availability. The extension is at the same or better rate if you move to a longer duration bracket. Give at least one week's notice.
Is routine servicing included?
For contracts of one month or more, routine servicing (oil change, filters, worn tyres) is generally at the rental partner's expense. The exact conditions are in the contract. In case of breakdown, a swap or repair is organised within 24–48 hours.
How does long-term rental compare to buying?
For stays of less than 18 months, long-term rental is almost always more advantageous: no capital tied up, no loss on resale, no paperwork (registration, roadworthiness test, annual insurance). Beyond 18 months, the calculation depends on the vehicle.
Can I take the vehicle outside Dakar?
Yes, unless stated otherwise. Saly, Saint-Louis, Casamance — long-term contracts are generally unrestricted within the country. Notify the partner of any cross-border trips (the Gambia) in advance.
Is billing monthly?
Depending on the contract: upfront payment for the full duration, or monthly instalments for contracts of 3+ months. Payment terms are negotiable and specified in the quote.
What if I want to return the vehicle early?
Early return conditions are specified in the contract. As a rule, one week's notice is required. The rate is recalculated on the actual duration (no penalty in most cases, but no pro-rata refund).
How does payment work?
Secure online payment on senoto.sn. For longer contracts, a payment schedule may be offered. Professional invoicing (company name, purchase order) available on request.
Can I swap vehicles mid-contract?
Subject to availability, a vehicle swap is possible (e.g. upgrading from a city car to an SUV for a circuit). Conditions (any fees, lead time) are to be discussed with the partner.
