Closer to AIBD than Dakar
Blaise Diagne airport is just 30 minutes from Thiès. If you’re staying in the region, Thiès is a better base than Dakar — you skip the entire Dakar peninsula altogether.
Senegal’s second city and a major road junction, Thiès sits at the crossroads between Dakar, AIBD airport, the Petite Côte, Touba and the interior. It’s actually closer to AIBD than Dakar centre (30 min vs 50 min), making it a surprisingly strategic base.
Thiès is 70 km from Dakar, 30 km from AIBD, and sits at the junction of roads leading to every region in Senegal. It’s the most versatile starting point in the country.
Blaise Diagne airport is just 30 minutes from Thiès. If you’re staying in the region, Thiès is a better base than Dakar — you skip the entire Dakar peninsula altogether.
Saly and Mbour are 40 minutes to the south. Thiès offers direct access via the Sindia road, without touching the Dakar toll motorway.
Touba (130 km, 2 hrs), Kaolack (190 km, 3 hrs), Tambacounda (470 km, 6 hrs): national roads heading east all start from Thiès. The Ila Touba motorway is in excellent condition.
University of Thiès, the Manufacture des Arts Décoratifs, a lively central market. Thiès is not just a road junction — it’s a living Senegalese city with its own character.
A city of 400,000 people and capital of the Thiès region, the city owes its development to the railway (the historic Dakar–Saint-Louis line) and remains a rail hub even though passenger trains have been replaced by road services.
The Manufacture Sénégalaise des Arts Décoratifs, founded in 1966, produces monumental tapestries with international recognition (several hang in UN buildings). Visits are free and well worth the detour.
Thiès central market is one of the largest in Senegal after Sandaga in Dakar. Fruit, vegetables, fabrics, crafts — intense atmosphere. The bush taxi station is right alongside, with shared seven-seater taxis heading in every direction.
Fuel: Total, Shell and Oilibya stations on the main roads (Dakar road, Mbour road, Touba road). No supply issues here.
World-renowned Senegalese tapestries, woven on site since 1966. Free to visit, artisans at work. Right in the heart of the city.
Drive-through Sahelian safari. Giraffes, rhinos, buffalo. On the road to Saly. Entrance around 10,000 FCFA. SUV or 4×4.
The pink lake (Dunaliella salina algae) reached via the Rufisque or Keur Massar road. The last few kilometres are sandy — 4×4 recommended.
Capital of Mouridism, monumental Grand Mosque. Excellent road (Ila Touba motorway). Any car category. Essential during the Grand Magal pilgrimage.
Petite Côte beaches within easy reach. Paved road, no toll. A city car is perfectly adequate.
Popenguine Nature Reserve, cliffs and wild beaches. Catholic Pentecost pilgrimage. Paved road all the way.
The Grand Magal of Touba is the largest Muslim pilgrimage in West Africa (three to five million pilgrims; date varies with the lunar calendar). Thiès sits on the direct Dakar–Touba route and bears considerable traffic during the three days of the event.
If you’re hiring a car around Magal time: book three to four weeks ahead (vehicles are extremely popular). Expect travel times to double or triple on the Dakar–Thiès–Touba axis. Gendarmerie presence is reinforced on these roads.
Outside the Magal, the Thiès–Touba road via the Ila Touba motorway is fast and comfortable (2 hours, no toll on this section).
