Fish market
The daily pirogue landing (around 4 pm) is a striking spectacle: hundreds of fishermen, fresh catch laid out on the sand, loud bargaining. With a car, you can load up your purchases and leave easily.
Mbour is the vibrant heart of the Petite Côte — an authentically Senegalese town 5 km from Saly, home to the region’s largest fish market, a raw and welcoming atmosphere, and direct access to the Sine Saloum and Joal-Fadiouth.
Mbour is the most central base on the Petite Côte. With a hire car, you range freely between Saly, Somone, Joal and the Sine Saloum without depending on shared taxis.

Saly-Portudal’s hotels and restaurants are 10 minutes away. Combine the authentic life of Mbour with the beach comforts of Saly without any effort.
Joal-Fadiouth (30 min), Palmarin and Djifer (1 hr 30 min), the Sine Saloum delta (2 hrs): all accessible from Mbour. A car unlocks every one of these excursions.
Unlike Saly (tourist-oriented), Mbour is a real Senegalese town: busy central market, local restaurants at local prices, residential neighbourhoods. A different and complementary experience.
A town of 250,000 people and préfecture of its département, Mbour stretches along the coast for several kilometres, from the fishing quarter (north, facing the sea) to the residential districts (east, towards the national road).
Main roads are paved and in good condition. Driving through the town can be slow during market hours (late morning, late afternoon) due to carts, pedestrians and street vendors. Outside those windows, traffic flows easily.
Petrol: Total and Shell at the northern entrance (Saly road), the southern entrance (Joal road), and on the N1. No fuel supply issues.
Mbour has a regional hospital, pharmacies, banks with ATMs (CBAO, SGBS, Ecobank) and internet cafés. Everything you need for an independent stay.
Protected lagoon, pirogues, pelicans. Calm beach. City car is fine.
Shell island, village over water, unique mixed cemetery. Paved road. City car or SUV.
Sahelian safari (giraffes, rhinos, antelopes). Paved road then maintained track. SUV or 4×4.
Spotted hyenas at dusk (Palmarin), pirogue departures to the Saloum Islands (Djifer). Sandy piste — 4×4 required.
Less crowded beaches than Saly, charming campsites. Paved road throughout.
Mangrove delta, Serer villages. 4×4 essential beyond Fatick. One to two-day excursion.
High season (November–April): dry weather, calm sea, ideal for excursions and beach days. The fishermen are most active (catches are better in the dry season). This is the busiest period — book your car ahead.
Rainy season (July–September): short, intense downpours, usually at night. Mbour and the Mbour–Saly road remain driveable. The pistes towards Palmarin and the Sine Saloum require a 4×4. The landscape is magnificent.
The fish market runs year-round, but catches are most spectacular in the dry season and during spring tides.
